After the disappearance on Sunday of AirAsia flight QZ8501 from radar as it was en route from Surabaya to Singapore, the government responded rapidly by ordering all units of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the police to search for the missing passenger plane.
The Indonesian Navy immediately deployed its 13 warships on a search and rescue mission in the Karimata Strait, where it was estimated that the plane might have crashed. The KRI Sultan Hasanuddin-366 is one of those 13 warships. The most recent mission of the KRI Sultan Hasanuddin-366 was to secure the waters of Natuna and Anambas Island, Riau Islands, from illegal fishermen.
The warship, which is one of the stars of the Navy, sailed straightaway to the Karimata Strait. If not for the mission, many crew members would have taken leave to celebrate the New Year, but duty comes first for all the crew of the KRI Sultan Hasanuddin-366. Ignoring New Year’s celebrations, the soldiers and crew joined one of the country’s biggest humanitarian missions.
One of The Jakarta Post’s photographers joined the soldiers and crew on board the KRI Sultan Hasanuddin-366. Here are some highlights of the warship’s noble mission.
